Step 2: Researching My Career

"What are my career options?"

You may know what you like to do (and what you wouldn’t want to do)... but now, how do you figure out what careers match your interests and skills? Plus, you will also want to know which jobs have the best outlook. There may be careers out there that you’d love to do, but you’ve never thought about them. It’s important to take the time to do your career research so that you feel you know all your options. You can do some of this research right here in the Columbus area! Here are just a few of the ways:

Career Opportunity Fair:

Central Community College hosts an annual event for students, counselors, and parents to explore various careers. Representatives from many different fields come to the event and talk to students about what they can expect if they go into a particular profession. There are sessions on important life skills, including: Money Smart skills, filling out applications, interviewing tips, and dressing for success. Contact your High School Guidance Counselor if you’d like to attend.

College Fairs:

Visit as many of these as you can to learn about the majors offered at each institution. Your High School Guidance Counselor should have information on college fairs being offered in your area.

Graduate Employment Survey Reports:

Higher education institutions often publish information on the job placement rates for their recent graduates.
